GET READY FOR CHANGE
5 WAYS TO RESET YOUR LIVING SPACE
Take a deep breath before you read on, because change takes time, and we’re only getting started.
In the spirit of ‘new year, new me’, take a good look around your home: Has anything changed in the last 5 years?
As the calendar resets itself once again to welcome warmer days under the sun, it’s easy to get excited as we anticipate for all the new and amazing things that the new year has in store for us.
Similar to how we pamper ourselves with new clothes to celebrate new beginnings with fresh hopes, did you know that redressing and putting up new decorations has the same effect for your living space?
Putting seasonal ornaments and holiday decorations aside, below are some easy ways to give your space the upgrade it needed to create a new environment for new dreams to come true.
#1: Declutter.
First thing’s first: Is your room just messy, or are you really bored with how it looks right now?
When we say we want to freshen up our living space, it’s important to be able to see how much space we have before we start playing with form and function.
Go from room to room and shift through your miscellaneous boxes to determine what can stay and what needs to go.
Along the way, take notes of what you like (and dislike) about this ‘old’ space as references to what you need and want for ‘new’ home.
Do you need to invest in a proper shelving to show off your collections, or are you ready to set up a photo wall to put framed pictures of your favourite memories and people on display?
When we’re left with only the things we want to keep, that’s when the real work begins to replace, rearrange, and redecorate.
Even without new colours or decors, letting our living spaces revert back their original form is a great way to welcome a new year.

#2: Replace and rearrange.
Once you know what you’re looking for in your ‘new’ space, it’s time to pick up the toolbox to fix what can be repaired or visit the local furniture depot to find the perfect replacement to bring home.
Unless you’re a professional who knows what you’re doing, we recommend to follow the basic rules of interior design to rearrange your space.
The 2:3 rule
Also known as the ‘golden ratio’, this rule is ideal for DIY enthusiasts to follow where rooms are divided and furniture is measured to achieve the perfect fit.
In order to create a cohesive interior layout, we recommend working backwards by putting main furniture (eg. sofa, bed, dining table) in place before allocating space for secondary pieces. Photo Highlight: focus on interior layout
Separate form and function with bold outlines and contrasting colours. By setting down large furniture first, we can have a clear view of how the rest of the room can complement and grow.

Be practical
If your goal is to create a liveable space that can support everyday use, never settle for beautiful seating that are uncomfortable to sit in or complex statement pieces that clashes with overall interior style.
While it is everyone’s wish to have a good-looking home, remember that great form and functional design comes first for furniture and all household fittings so they can serve long-lasting use.
Before you change anything, think about how you want to move around and how you can create the most convenience to save precious time in the mornings. Remember to keep walkways clear of pointy corners and unnecessary clutter to prevent accidental bumps and avoidable messes!

#3: Introduce a new colour palette.
After years of seeing your ‘old’ space in their faded colours and time-worn glory, a fresh coat of paint or new wallpaper installation is one of the easiest ways to welcome the new year.
In celebration of fresh starts and new beginnings, redressing our surroundings in new shades and textures is our favourite way to create a brand new environment for us to explore and discover.
Depending on your time and budget, seek inspiration from both new and old fittings to determine the best colour alternatives to bring home.
From rugs to throw pillows to curtains and decors, don’t miss out on accessories like these to complete your new interior theme.
In case you’re stuck between choices, seek inspiration from the classics to discover new ways to let colour play. Don’t forget to take lighting into consideration to create the right setting for every mood.

#4: Bring nature home as potted pets.
After spending most of our days in the concrete jungle, coming home to natural elements actually has a comforting and healing effect to help us unwind.
Regardless of being indoors or outdoors, houseplants are easily the best complements that can breathe new life in any interior setting.
Choose your perfect potted companion by deciding how much time and effort you intend to commit to help your new buddy grow.
From leafy evergreens to prickly cacti, there are tons of options to choose from to enhance your interior aesthetics with natural zen.
If you don’t have space for a garden, but you’re keen on keeping a few of your favourite plants around, keep them in places where they can easily be seen so we don’t forget about them when life gets in the way.

#5: Make a statement with a new feature.
What was the highlight of your ‘old’ space? These are the features that can naturally draw the attention of anyone who walks into the room.
While these focal points are generally meant to wow and spark conversations, don’t forget that they are ultimately a reflection of your personality that can remind you of better times and fond memories.
A personal touch to enhance the overall aesthetics of a room that is also a beautiful attraction that can serve everyday function.
From decorative light fixtures to paintings and heirloom furniture that are rich with sentimental value, do you have anything in mind that can symbolise the change that you’ll be embracing in your new chapter?
What about a colourful throw to style up your couch, or an abstract artwork to liven up the hallway? Don’t be afraid to play with contrasts to highlight your new chapter with a bright and cheerful accent.
Always remember that in your living space, you can put yourself first. If art doesn’t speak to you, putting up racks to show off your pottery collection is a perfectly fine too.
